Mid-Career Coaching

Transition from thinking about one projectto developing a research program
6 months of mid-career coaching by a certified executive/professional coach sponsored by Edge for Scholars.
One of the most challenging transitions in an academic career is growing your research program after receipt of your first R01 (or equivalent grant). To obtain your first R01 you were told to “focus, focus, focus!” and it has paid off. Now you are at an inflection point where you must expand your science from one R01 to an entire research program supported by multiple grants. This requires a new skill set.

To help you transition from thinking about one project to developing a research program, Edge for Scholars (EFS) is excited to offer professional coaching to interested applicants.

The coach is a certified executive/professional coach and has worked on many projects within the VUMC Department of Medicine and Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management. Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee at EFS.

Successful applicants will demonstrate a commitment to academic research, a desire to grow their research program, and the time and energy to commit to coaching. Coaching relationships sponsored by EFS will be for a 6-month duration with an option to extend for another 6 months depending on progress.

The International Coaching Federation describes professional coaching as the process of “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.” In general, professional coaching can help the individual to define career goals, assist the progress of the individual’s objectives, unlock levels of self-awareness and ultimately enable the individual to reach career goals. The coach is an individual outside of the institution who focuses on your professional growth and development. A coach will help you navigate an ever-changing professional landscape successfully.

Many EFS faculty have coaches, including our EFS Leadership Team Members!
Successful coaching entails a commitment on your part to meet with the coach on a regular basis, to be willing to self-reflect and to be open about your goals and your challenges. In general, expect to meet once per month for 60 minutes. Between coaching sessions, you may have readings or self-reflective exercises.
The client-coach relationship is private. What is said between client and coach stays between client and coach.
Applications are closed for 2025
We will continue to add more individuals to the coaching roster over time.
