Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center (VICC) has been invited to participate in The V Foundation 2017 V Scholar Award. The V Scholar award is a $200,000 grant awarded in two annual installments of $100,000. Only direct costs of the research are supported by this award.

VUMC may nominate up to two candidates for this award, if at least one of the two nominee applicants identifies as someone from an underrepresented in science minority (for the purposes of this application: African American or of African descent, Hispanic American, or Native American and/or Alaskan Native). 

As in 2016, we are continuing to raise funds to support the Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund initiative. Among our highly ranked finalists for the 2017 V Scholar program, we will designate at least one of the highest ranked applications from a minority applicant as the recipient of a 2017 Stuart Scott Memorial Fund V Scholar Award.

Special Focus area: Any area of cancer research is eligible.

Applicant Eligibility:  

All nominated applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible to submit an application:

  • Applicant must have at least 2 years post-doctoral (M.D. or Ph.D.) fellowship training. For MDs, a minimum of one year is acceptable if only one year is required for the specialty.
  • By the Due Date of the Application, applicants must have all the following:
    • Hold a tenure-track faculty position as an assistant professor at their cancer research institution. Non-promotable, adjunct, affiliated, temporary, part-time or acting faculty positions are not eligible for this grant competition.
    • Have been appointed to their first full-time assistant professor position within the last 5 years, and not yet been promoted to associate professor.
    • Clinical scientists are eligible if the research institution can demonstrate that it will fully support the research applicant (e.g., dedicated lab space, start-up funds, dedicated research time).
    • Applicants must be either US Citizens or be a permanent legal resident in the US.
  • Applicant can NOT already have been awarded an RO1 or RO1-equivalent grants. As of the due date of the Application, applicants who have been awarded RO1 equivalent grants (Project leader on an NIH multi-investigator grant, ACS) as principal investigators or as co-leader at the time of application submission are not eligible for consideration as a V Scholar. In addition, applicants cannot be a co-leader on a SPORE project or (co)PI of the following NIH grant mechanisms: U01, DP1, DP2, R37, R23. In addition, principal investigators for research project grants (RPGs), analogous to NIH/NCI R01 awards, would be ineligible.

Anyone interested in being considered as Vanderbilt’s nominee must submit the following (in PDF format) to LSO@vanderbilt.edu  by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 12.

  1. Brief (2 page maximum) research plan including summary budget;
  2. Brief statement of support from department chair/center director;
  3. A brief CV or NIH Biosketch

Submissions should reference the program name in the subject line of the email. 

Once received, all proposals will be forwarded to an internal review committee that will choose the final nominee. The chosen nominee will submit a full proposal to the foundation by the June 1, 2017 deadline.
