For PIs early in their careers such as myself, the thought of what is required to achieve promotion at VUMC while on the basic scientist/physician scientist tenure track can often feel overwhelming and provoke significant stress and anxiety. These feelings are only amplified by the struggles that many of you face right now regarding funding, space, and independence. How does one tap into different funding sources and agencies such as the VA? How does one negotiate for space? How does one become independent from his or her mentor? When should one consider interviewing for outside positions? Many of these issues were discussed at our first meeting of COMPASS which followed the Newman Seminar by Dr. Penn entitled “Preparing Yourself for Promotion at VU.” While there were no easy answers, we had a productive discussion in which different members of the group shared their own experiences, insights, and suggestions to these problems. I strongly believe that these types of interactions demonstrate the potential of COMPASS for peer and near-peer mentoring. The advice and support that can result from discussing these issues with others in similar situations or with those who have recently overcome these challenges can be extremely helpful. I encourage you to join us for the next COMPASS meeting on September 22 after the Newman Seminar.
