During the Newman Seminar entitled “Diversifying Your Research Portfolio,” Dr. Halasa, Dr. Roumie, and I emphasized the importance of applying for grants from a variety of funding sources.  We talked about the number of times and different places we had submitted grants before finally landing one.  At the COMPASS meeting that followed, we talked about the professional and personal challenges associated with writing and submitting numerous grants.  When should you get your mentors involved in your writing process?  How do you get them involved?  Do they have time?  We also discussed work-life balance and how we find the extra time to work on grants (and other things) while balancing our responsibilities at home.  Who watches your children and takes them to school?  Are you able to work later in the evening?  I believe that the next Newman Seminar on October 20, “Life Happens,” will provide ideas and resources to help you get that balance.  Please join us afterwards for COMPASS if you would like to discuss these topics further, listen to strategies from others in your position, or simply to blow off some steam with others who can relate to your stress!
