As K awardees, all Newman Society members are encouraged to attend monthly Newman Society seminars and take advantage of our resources for early career faculty.
These seminars offer:
- Guidance on topics like grant writing, management, mentoring, budgeting, and writing progress reports.
- Advice tailored to career stage.
- New insight from senior faculty
- Responsible Conduct of Research credit (some seminars).
- A chance to ask questions about topics of concern to you, such as:
- In my situation, which R award should I apply for and when?
- How should I handle my first progress report?
- What should I do about this conflict with my mentor?
- A confidential environment in which to ask questions.
- An opportunity to connect with others at similar career stages.

Elliot Voss Newman was a distinguished cardiologist, scientist, medical scholar and teacher. A graduate of Harvard College and Medical School, he came to Vanderbilt from Johns Hopkins in 1952 to start a program of clinical physiology and research.
At one point, he was the author of the electrocardiography chapter in Harrisons’ Textbook of Medicine and of the renal physiology chapter in Cecil and Loeb’s textbook. He was a pioneer in the development of medical engineering and the use of applied mathematics and computer science for clinical problems.
Dr. Newman was the first Joe and Morris Werthan Professor of Experimental Medicine at Vanderbilt and was founder of the Clinical Research Center, which bears his name. He was a friend and mentor to medical students and house officers alike and helped to promote many scientific careers.

This talk was extremely practical, helpful, and inspiring. It was refreshing to hear about challenges faced and encouraging to see the persistence required in the pursuit of grant funding. I thought it was wonderful and we need more example success stories like this.
